Everybody knows that Les Burgraves, the trilogy of Victor Hugo, staged at the Comédie-Française from March to June 1843, has passed into literary history as a a failure that marks the end of the romantic drama. Nevertheless, reading the press of that time we can discover some unknown aspects of the story. Taken by Hugo himself, some theatrical strategies don’t favour, on the contrary penalize the performance of the play. It isn’t possible to rehabilitate Les Burgraves, but the french press going from March to June 1843 shows that the context – more than the drama hitself - contributed significantly to his failure
